“I am a semi-professional player based in East Anglia. I play in a variety of ensembles – big band, concert band, pit work, and with orchestras.

I last had personal lessons over twenty years ago and had been looking for some time for the right opportunity to take my playing to the next level and for new challenges. I began working with Noel nearly two years ago after I bought an Eclipse trumpet from Leigh McKinney. I contacted Noel for an introductory consultation on Leigh’s recommendation and have never looked back. Although nervous about playing for someone of such immense pedigree, Noel immediately put me at ease in our lessons.

He introduced me to the concept of trumpet practice as a meditation or therapeutic regime, enabling me to find both the time and motivation for daily playing alongside a busy ‘day job’. After building the necessary skills and mental focus with his guidance, I no longer feel that practice is a penance for lack of technique, but rather is something enjoyable and at the same time relaxing.

This ‘reprogramming’, focusing on contentment, commitment and connection with the trumpet has in turn allowed me to release technical issues and to make significant strides towards improving my register, stamina, sound and confidence.

To my surprise, I find that this renewed confidence and the ability to relax and focus has also had a significant impact in my professional and personal life away from my trumpet playing. I have not only learnt a great deal from Noel about the trumpet, but also about myself. Our journey together so far has been a musical inspiration, a privilege and a revelation in self-discovery.
